Elite athletes describe jump as the capability/drive to explode off the line, burst into an opening, or win a foot race etc.  Descriptions of talent often include the ability to anticipate where the openings will be and when to break.

 For most athletes this innate acceleration, or power, erodes over time.  While the wisdom of experience helps fill this void - in most sports there is no substitute for speed, quickness, and power.
