What's in a Paradigm?

I spent 15+ years as an organizational effectiveness consultant; among the most illuminating discussions in moving organizations forward was the Power of Paradigms by Joel Barker.

Simply defined: paradigms are a set of strongly held beliefs that act as filters in the way we perceive people, places, information, and events.  Things that match our paradigms are quickly accepted into our thinking; things that don’t match our paradigms tend to be rejected.

Thus paradigms affect how we see and respond to things around us and what actions we take.  Paradigms can range from the mundane like (modeling) Mom’s way to clean the kitchen to life-altering: that 52,000 metric tons of steel cannot sink.

Health care is driven by paradigms; in North America these paradigms include the following:

  • that it’s normal for most people (especially as we age) to be on multiple medications;
  • that it’s ok that these medications (typically) don’t fix the problem but rather cause new problems - thereby creating the need for more medications that cause more new problems, and
  • that health care system priorities are focused on paying for medications rather than reducing the need for medications.

19 years ago post-Guillain-Barre I learned firsthand the shortcomings of a health care system driven by such a sickness model.  It had no answers for my full recovery (to wellness); those in charge even seemed surprised by my question.

In the years that followed I mused about paradigms related to traditional and non-traditional medicine, western medicine, Chinese medicine, alternative medicine and so on.  Indeed, as a patient my only paradigm was and remains “effective medicine”.

 The good news is the journey led me to a set of technologies/methods (beginning with PEMF) based on a paradigm of restoring cellular-health rather than medicating sickness.  Access to these technologies has taken my well-being to a whole new level and kept me free from sickness-based paradigms - and MORE IMPORTANTLY free of the medications I should be consuming at my age.

Whenever I have tried to share this good news with the wonderful medical team who cared for me through Guillain Barre (thinking they’d want to know in the interest of helping other patients) I have gotten virtually no response.

As the reality of their seeming disinterest settles in I smile to myself and think of Mr.  Barker’s comment: “that’s the power of paradigms again”.
